Wow! Some fresh thinking from Lytro. They’ve finally revealed what their new camera actually looks like, and have opened limited sales to those that expressed an interest early on - i.e. myself. Unfortunately it’s US only, but I’m working on that ;)
A little bit about the camera: It’s super-minimal aluminium & silicon rubber candy-bar design sporting a 1.46” touch screen for setting an exposure point and navigating through images, a power button, a slider for zoom and a shutter button - that’s it. Weighing in at a mere 214g, it has a speedy low-light-friendly f2 aperture lens throughout it’s 8x optical zoom range (35-280mm equiv). The sensor captures 11 million light rays (or “megarays”) per image. This is “at least HD” so we’re looking at more than 1080 x 1080 pixels with filesizes being ±21.3mb per image.
So while that’s all sexy and stuff, the real benefits are in it’s imaging capabilities: No need for focusing (this can be manipulated AFTER shooting), and of course it’s capturing 3D information from a single lens - so the viewpoint can be altered POST shooting too… This really has to be seen to be believed, but let me just say that this is the beginning (for consumers) of a revolution in photography.
